In this episode of Biotech Beat, Dr. Peter Kazarinoff interviews Ryan, a Global Logistics Manager at Agilent Technologies.

Ryan is an Austin Community College (ACC) Alum who got interested in biotech through a job raising crickets as an alternative protein source. Ryan loves to camp as well as use his love of food to make beer and cheese—the tasty side of biology. While he was getting his biotechnology certificate at ACC he used some of his skills to genetically alter the yeast that is part of the cider making process so that it would glow under a UV light.

After gaining his biotechnology certificate he took a job in the reagent production team, worked his way up, and then joined Agilent as a 6-month contractor doing benchwork in cancer treatment projects. During that time he saw other avenues in the biotech world that spoke to his business background. He believes that the combination of his business and biotech experiences as well as his “foot in the door” contracting position helped him get his Global Logistics job. He admits that when he started, he was both over qualified due to his diverse background and inexperienced in biotech, but by taking an entry level position he gained valuable insights into working at the ground-level.
