Community College Innovation Challenge 2022
The Community College Innovation Challenge (CCIC) is led by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) in partnership with the National Science Foundation (NSF). It is a fun and exciting national competition where community college student teams, working with a faculty or administrator mentor, use science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to innovate solutions to real-world problems; participate in an Innovation Boot Camp; and compete for cash awards.
Planning is underway for an IN-PERSON Innovation Boot Camp in the Washington D.C. area on June 13-16, 2022 and full travel support will be provided for the finalist teams to attend.
Previous challenges have showcased the work of several InnovATEBIO programs:
Ivy Tech Community College, South Bend, 2021. In 2015 and in 2021 the IvyTech Community College South Bend team made it to the finals in the CCIC. In 2015 they developed a hand-held sensor named "Betadataquantadata", while in 2021 their entry was "ViruScan", a fast, accurate hand-held test-strip device with which any concerned person could screen themselves for the presence of a pandemic virus now, and in the future.
Los Angeles Mission College 2018: In 2018 the Los Angeles Mission College team was named a top-ten finalist in the CCIC. The college's team presented their proposal for using bacteria in a microbial fuel cell configuation to both treat wastewater and use it to generate electricity throughout Los Angeles.
Del Mar College 2017: In 2017 the team from DEl Mar College developed "Enterosword", a tailor-made virus product to use against antibiotic-resistant bacteria and were named one of the top-ten finalists.
