Thank you Dr. Elaine Johnson

I haven't had a chance to meet Dr. Johnson, but I know I owe her a big Thank You! for all of her efforts.

Dr. Elaine Johnson to retire after decades of spearheading biotechnology education in SF Bay Area

SAN FRANCISCO – City College of San Francisco (CCSF) and its Board of Trustees honored Dr. Elaine Johnson at its board meeting scheduled on Thursday, August 30th, 2018.  Dr. Johnson is retiring after decades of spearheading biotechnology education in San Francisco Bay Area.  She has been a force in the field of biotechnology education and training, and has fought for significant resources and funding, which established CCSF as the hosting institution for Bio-Link, a center focused on biotechnology and life sciences funded by National Science Foundation (NSF). 

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I thank Dr. Elaine Johnson for her contributions not only to City College of San Francisco but to biotechnology education and the resulting medical advances that benefit many,” said Brigitte Davila, President of CCSF’s Board of Trustees.  “We congratulate her on her well-deserved retirement, and we celebrate her as she steps into a new chapter of her journey.”

Because of Dr. Johnson and her colleagues, including Drs. Bart Gledhill, Lisa Seidman, Linnea Fletcher, and Sandra Porter—among many others, CCSF has received close to $19 million in NSF grant funding for Bio-Link and related projects.  In addition, Dr. Johnson brought in funding and resources for a variety of grants that have put CCSF and its sister colleges on the map for biotechnology education. 

With tenacity, Dr. Johnson and her colleagues have created a lasting network among biotechnology educators from high schools, community colleges, and even some universities across the nation.  As a result, Dr. Johnson not only has made impact in the field of education but also in the field of biotechnology as more and more diverse community college students make their own marks within biotechnology laboratories throughout the nation and around world.

“City College is proud to serve as the host institution of Bio-Link.  Innovation is part of the DNA of City College.  Thanks to Dr. Elaine Johnson, our College’s innovative leadership is symbolized by Bio-Link,” said Dr. Mark Rocha, Chancellor of CCSF.  “The entire CCSF community, especially many of our students, thank Dr. Elaine Johnson for her many contributions.”
