The Del Mar phage gang strikes again - students win big at the 2018 Texas ASM conference
The 2018 Texas ASM Fall meeting was hosted by the Texas A&M University and co-hosted by Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, November 8-10th. Both faculty and students gave oral presentations, on topics that ranged across microbiology, as well as molecular and cellular biology. The conference also had an afternoon dedicated to undergraduate and graduate student poster presentations and with prizes awarded for the best talks and posters in each category.
Dr. Daisy Zhang and Dr. John Robert Hatherill from Del Mar College organized the judging and award ceremonies. Dr. Linnea Fletcher and Dr. Daisy Zhang organized and co-chaired a STEM education session during the meeting.
Seven students from Del Mar College presented their internship posters during the meeting. They are also the only group of students from a community college who competed in this conference. A poster titled “Genomic identification and characterization of an antibiotic-resistant Ochrobactrum intermedium isolate from the Amos Rehabilitation Keep” from first author Tara Clance (Del Mar College), won second place. Another Del Mar College student, Ryan Cabio won the third place in the same competition by presenting his work on “Biochemical Oxygen Demand in Local River Systems and Sediments Post-Hurricane Harvey.”
