Program Description

The Biotech program at Kennedy King College is focused on providing our students with opportunity, access, and resources to successfully obtain entry level employment in the Biotech industry. This program will provide students with state-of-the-art technical skills and soft skills (e.g., critical thinking) which will make them highly competitive candidates for employment in the biotechnology industry.

We plan to enroll 15 – 16 students in the first year of the program, drawing mostly from local populations that are typically underrepresented in STEM careers, namely African Americans and Hispanics. Students will be taught the theory and practical laboratory skills in the following areas flow cytometry, microscopy (e.g., fluorescent and Phase contrast), genomics, proteomics, chromatography (e.g., HPLC), spectrophotometry, cell culture, bioinformatics, Python (coding language) and biomanufacturing (e.g., monoclonal antibodies). Successful students will receive both the AAS degree (City Colleges of Chicago), and the Biotechnician Assistant credential (https://biotility.research.ufl.edu/).
