Program Description

Wilson Community College offers the BioWork certificate program. The BioWork certificate program will teach you the foundational skills you need to begin a career as a process technician for a biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or chemical manufacturing company. Process technicians are responsible for the production of chemical and pharmaceutical products.

Upon successful completion of this program, the student should be able to:

  • Demonstrate the technical background knowledge needed to support biopharmaceutical manufacturing in accordance with industry standards. 
  • Demonstrate hands-on laboratory skills and document, interpret, and present results appropriately applying Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs) and Good Documentation Practices (GDPs) in accordance with industry standards.  
  • Demonstrate knowledge of industry regulations and the regulatory environment in the biotechnology industry.
  • Effectively discuss current ethical issues surrounding the biotechnology industry and utilize critical thinking skills to make bioethical decisions in accordance with industry standards. 
  • Apply Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) concepts, including Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs).

Tuition:  Eligible high school students can begin the program while in high school and earn credits tuition free. Grants for scholarships and pre-apprenticeships are offered when available.

Apprenticeships:  students have an opportunity to apply for apprenticeships.

We are currently partnering with Sallie B. Howard and WAAT (Wilson Academy of Applied Technology).  We will begin teaching BioWork at Beddingfield High School in January 2025.
