Biotechnology in Spain
In December 2023, Austin Community College Instructor, Joseph Oleniczak, Principal Investigator, NSF-ATE Award #2055607, traveled to Spain with supplemental funding from NSF-DCL 19-057 to research the overall biotechnology ecosystem of Spain and in particular the connections between Spanish academic programs of study for biotechnician training, biotechnology research at universities and government laboratories, and biotechnology industry. For his research, Joseph Oleniczak completed fieldwork in Barcelona and Madrid to collect qualitative data through interviews of Spanish biotechnology professionals and site photographs and videos. This data was used to create a learning module in Canvas on biotechnology in Spain that includes a virtual field trip. This learning module will be implemented in Joseph’s biotechnology courses at Austin Community College this Spring 2024 semester.
Specifically, Joseph visited Leanbio Pro (biomanufacturing company in Barcelona), Institut de Biotecnología Universitat Autònoma Barcelona (Institute of Biotechnology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona), Universidad Politécnica de Madrid Ingeniería Agronómica, Alimentaria y de Biosistemas (Polytechnic University of Madrid School of Agricultural, Food and Biosystems Engineering), and the Centro Nacional de Biotecnología (National Center for Biotechnology).
Visit Oleniczak's Canvas modules on biotechnology in Spain and Iceland.
Joseph is eager to share this Canvas learning module on biotechnology in Spain with other members of the NSF-ATE community. Please email Joseph at jolenicz@austincc.edu for more information.
