Learning about Career Opportunities at the 10th NIH Community College Day

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) held the 10th Community College (CC) Day on November 19, 2018. This provided community college students and faculty in Maryland and Virginia an excellent opportunity to visit the NIH campus and learn about careers and training opportunities in Biomedical and Health-related fields.
The NIH CC Day keynote talk was delivered by Dr. Erica Barr, Director NIH CC Programs and Dr. Sharon Milgram, Director, Office of Intramural Training and Education. It was very insightful and inspiring for the students. Following the talk, there were breakout sessions on careers including; Research, Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Veterinary medicine, Allied Health, Behavioral Sciences, etc. Each session had a panel of professionals who shared their expert advice in specific careers and all they had learned. The second breakout session was focused on topics such as resume writing, networking, creating a personal statement, and transferring to 4-year colleges. While students attended these sessions, faculty got an opportunity to get together and learn on how to use HHMI resources in class or work towards getting grants in partnership with 4-year colleges/ Universities. There were also opportunities for NIH postdoctoral fellows to explore teaching opportunities in Community Colleges over lunch while students connected with each other and professionals in various fields.
Attendees at this event included representation from Baltimore City Community College, Montgomery Community College, Frederick Community College, Hagerstown Community College, North Virginia Community College to name a few. About 50 students and 4 faculty members from Baltimore City Community College attended this annual event, including representatives from the Biotechnology and Allied Health Programs.
The NIH Community College Day was truly an exceptional event for both community college students and faculty of Maryland and Virginia to connect with each other as well as network with a number of professionals from various fields. It opens up doors to many avenues and destinations.
