What kinds of skills do entry level employees need in the new fields of regenerative medicine and regenerative medicine biomanufacturing? InnovATE BIO team members Russ Read and Thomas Tubon, and InnovATEBIO program leader Sengyong Lee, tackled this question in a new article with co-authors Gary Green, Joshua Hunsberger, and Anthony Atala.

The article discusses basic employability skills, core bioscience skills, and regenerative medicine biomanufacturing technical skills. This work is helpful for faculty who are designing or revamping their curriculum.

The Coalition of State Bioscience Institutes (CSBI) has released the 2021 Life Sciences Workforce Trends Report June 2021 at the BIO Digital Convention. The report provides a national snapshot of the current and anticipated talent needs of the nation’s dynamic life science industry.

Congratulations to the Community College Innovation Challenge (CCIC) team from Ivy Tech Community College in South Bend. This is the second time Ivy Tech students have made it to the finals in the CCIC. The first time was in 2015 with Betadataquantadata, a hand-held biosensor for coliphage.

Teams from InnovATEBIO programs have done well in this competition before with teams from Del Mar College and Los Angeles Mission College making it to the finals.

Congratulations CGHI, Biotility, and Collin College!

The Center for Global Health Innovation (CGHI) has been awarded a $1.2MM Advanced Technological Education (ATE) grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to expand the Biotechnician Assistant Credentialing Exam (BACE) in 5 states as a tool to certify an individual’s capabilities and accelerate the development of the bioscience workforce. The BACE is an industry-recognized exam designed to assess core skills and knowledge sets identified by industry, and represented within the academic and performance standards of Biotechnology programs. The Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (WADDL) is a leader in the discovery, detection, and prevention of diseases affecting livestock, pets, poultry, and fish in the Pacific Northwest. I got a chance to read about the exciting new NSF grant Dr. Bryans was awarded at Montgomery County Community College.

Dr. Margaret Bryans wrote the NSF grant that awarded $573,347 to Montgomery County Community College to support MCCC's efforts to build Southeastern Pennsylvania's advanced technical workforce for the cell and gene therapy industry. This program is a partnership between AGC Biologics (Bothell, WA) and Shoreline Community College (Shoreline, WA). Internship applicants are interviewed by AGC Biologics. AGC Biologics extends offers to those applicants it wishes to hire as interns. Hired interns are able to enroll in the suite of ‘Introduction to Biomanufacturing’ courses (BIOL 111, 112 and 113), which are taught by SCC faculty at the AGC Training Facility at AGC Biologics.
