This course introduces the basic concepts involved in the separation of molecules. The purpose of this course is to give students a basic understanding of the basic underlying physico-chemical principles of the chromatographic process. It covers the principles governing chromatographic separation methods, applications of chromatographic methods used in biological and analytical labs, and techniques of chromatography. Students complete lab work using a variety of methods including: thin layer, gel permeation, ion exchange, gas chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography. Emphasis is placed on understanding separation methods and applying concepts to a variety of samples. The correlation between chemical structure and separation is explored in a variety of separation methods. Students will learn how to choose the best methods for separating and analyzing samples, how to prepare various samples, pack chromatography columns and carry out experiments using chromatography instruments. Both qualitative and quantitative chromatography methods will be used with different techniques. In addition, students learn to interpret chromatographic results and practice documentation and reporting skills. Throughout the course we emphasize how you can apply fundamental aspects to troubleshooting and method development and other aspects of your daily work. Theoretical concepts are put into a practical context through numerous experimental examples.
