Event Details
Event Description

The ASM Conference for Undergraduate Educators (ASMCUE) celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2018. More than 350 microbiology and biology educators gather annually for an engaging four-day conference. Educators come from a wide range of institutions – from community colleges to international universities – in order to fully immerse themselves in biological sciences
The Conference program includes plenary, concurrent, poster, and exhibit sessions. Participants engage in formal and informal small group discussions between colleagues all focused on the same goal: to improve teaching and learning in the biological sciences.
We are excited to announce a new track to ASMCUE in 2018. The Biotechnology Track is made possible through an ASM partnership with Bio-Link and the AC2 Bio-Link Regional Center. Conference attendees will share strategies to prepare students for successful entrance and advancement in the STEM workforce. Hear from leaders in the field, including Dr. Linnea Fletcher from Austin Community College.
Poster and Oral presentation abstract submissions are due by 11:59 PM PST April 2, 2018.

Event Presentation
Staying current: what science & skills should educators learn and be teaching?
This session described a three-part strategy for identifying which kinds of knowledge and skills that you might need to learn and how you might going about learning these. We discussed online tools like Biotech-Careers.org, Bio-Link related resources such as Making the Call - an interactive movie that can help with learning about biomanufacturing, and the NSF Grant database to identify business activities and companies in your area. Knowing more about the business areas of your local companies and research institutions will help you provide better advice to your students and provide focus when looking for professional development. We also discuss factors to consider when choosing development opportunities, such as how you plan to use the information. In the last part, we described how different venues support different kinds of learning, opportunities for faculty internships, and compared the benefits of conferences that focus on science vs. conferences focused on education.
