Event Description

Reducing variability/increasing reproducibility is essential in biotechnology, whether one’s job is producing a biopharmaceutical product, performing research, testing samples, or any other function. At Madison Area Technical College, we teach a course in basic laboratory skills to individuals who already possess at least a BS degree in a biological science; many of the participants have advanced degrees and/or industry experience. In working with these students, we have explored how variability stealthily arises in the most basic – and often thought to be simple – procedures. In this webinar, we will show student data that provides insights into how science professionals can recognize, understand, and control variability. We have found that as students focus on relatively simple – and essential -- tasks, they develop insights into the complexities of quality and metrology.
