Event Description

The faculty and staff of Madison College and City College of San Francisco are pleased to announce this exciting summer professional development opportunity designed for high-school and two-year college science and technical education instructors.  Madison College and CCSF have partnered to bring comprehensive curriculum in both human and mouse stem cell systems.  The San Francisco course will focus on mouse embryonic stem cells and models of cell differentiation, along with curriculum designed to introduce cell culture to high school students.

ABOUT THE ACADEMY:

The EMERGING STEM CELL TECHNOLOGIES Academy is a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded project (DUE 1501553) designed to provide hands-on experiences and instructional training necessary for teachers to incorporate stem cell technologies into their own classrooms. The Academy will be taught by a team of nationally recognized biotechnology educators led by Dr. Thomas Tubon and Dr. Robert DelVecchio.

To benefit from this curriculum, teachers need to have access to a cell culture facility, either at their own college, or in the case of high school teachers, in partnership with a community college.  Priority will be given to teachers who meet these qualifications, or those with plans to develop such facilities.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

This academy will cover:

  • Routine culturing and differentiation of mouse embryonic stem cells
  • Mouse models of cell differentiation – muscle and adipose cells
  • Cell culture experiments for high school/community college partnerships
  • Light and epifluorescence microscopy
  • PCR-based gene expression profiling for cell differentiation
  • Ethical issues for working with human stem cells, including current policy
  • Classroom integration of instructional materials and tips for coursework and cost sustainability

WHAT IS PROVIDED:

Funding from the National Science Foundation provide teachers with generous stipends of $500 to offset the costs of travel.

Limited support for lodging may be provided during the workshop.

Comprehensive professionally prepared curriculum will be provided to take back to the classroom.
