Slippery Slopes, Leaky Abstractions, & ChatGPT: How Ambitious Site Builders Will Create Future Drupal Sites

This video discusses my experience as an "ambitious site builder" migrating InnovATEBIO.org from Drupal 7 to Drupal 10. I highlight the challenges of this process, including dealing with large numbers of users, old content, and complex data structures, especially with a module called "node auto translate" (16:31).

I share how I used AI tools like ChatGPT to help with various tasks, such as generating SQL queries for data migration (19:03), creating custom Twig extensions for advanced theming (21:15), and solving caching issues. I emphasize that while AI can significantly reduce development time and enable tasks they couldn't do before, it also requires strong debugging skills and an awareness of the AI's limitations, such as hallucinating functions or providing outdated information (29:35, 30:27).

The presentation also touches on DevOps practices for managing Drupal sites, including local development environments, code syncing with GitHub, and database/file backups (12:00). Finally, I reflect on Drupal's continued developer-centric nature and the issue of module compatibility across versions, suggesting that AI might help bridge some of these gaps in the future (34:24).
