The Biotechnology Program at Berkeley City College attracts a range of students from recent high school graduates to college graduates with 4-year and higher degrees who are seeking to retool or improve their skills to be competitive in the workplace. Upon graduation with an A.S. degree or Certificate in Biotechnology, about half of the graduates progress to technician and eventually head technician positions in research, industry and clinical labs. The remaining students continue their education and complete either 4-year degrees, graduate degrees, or proceed to professional schools, e.g. pharmacy, nursing, medicine and veterinary science.
BCCs Biotechnology course offerings recently have been revamped and streamlined to improve their transferability. Presently, 3 courses meet the State’s new biotech C-ID descriptors for articulation with CSU and 5 courses have been approved for UC Transfer Course Agreement. In addition, there have been changes in the Certificates and A.S. Degree to allow more flexibility and accessibility for students, particularly those returning from the workplace. The two certificates and an A.S. degree are now clearly stackable. Future non-credit certificates are planned that will involve several classes and summer workshops for those presently working in the industry.
