Oxnard College offers a STEM funded Summer Biotech Institute which studies Cardiothread 3D Prototyping, Ocean Harmful Algae Blooms (HABS) Environmental Sample Processor Design and Oral Microbiome Pathogen Detection Device Development (LifeSmile). Students seeking this experience participate in teams as High School students, Community College students and University students, typically in a 1:2:1 ratio. In the fall and winter, students formulate posters and presentations for Undergraduate Research Conferences from the summer data. We participate with these local Southern California conferences on a regular basis during regular years when we can attend in person.: Bio-Link Fellows Forum (www.bio-link.org), SCCUR (Southern California Conference for Undergraduate Research), SCASM (Southern California American Society of Microbiology Chapter), IEEE BME Biotech (International Electronics and Electrical Engineering Biomechanical Engineering Biotechnology Los Angeles Division Competition, and CSUPERB (California State University Program for Excellence in Research in Biotechnology) and Bio.org (Biotechnology Industry Organization).
In 2021, students developed 3D prototyping and design extensions to their research projects, enabling them to present at online virtual research conferences. Eight undergraduate Oxnard College students participated in the online research weekly on zoom on Saturdays in 2020-2021. Eleven presentations of original science in 2021 were made at virtual Undergraduate Research Conferences at: Stanford SRI (2), Harvard NESS (1) , Chicago CAURS (2), UCLA Research Week (1) , Labroots Microbiology Week (1) ABRCMS ASM (1), and SCCUR 2021 (3). Three project areas were represented from the Central Coast Biotechnology Institute at Oxnard College Lab at these conferences: Cardiothread 3D Prototyping, Oral Microbiome Lifesmile Device, and Ocean HABS ESP.
