InnovATEBIO is the National Science Foundation-funded National Biotechnology Education Center dedicated to strengthening the biotechnology technician workforce through a collaborative network of community colleges, K-12 schools, and industry partners.

The 2019-2024 and 2024-2025 evaluation reports summarize the Center’s impact in four areas:

  • Workforce Data & Industry Alignment: InnovATEBIO provides up-to-date labor market information through the biennial National Life Science Workforce Trends Report and maintains specialized Hubs that develop industry-vetted curricula in areas like biomanufacturing and immunotherapy.
  • Professional Development: Initiatives such as the Biotech Boot Camp and the Bioscience Leadership Institute (BLI) train educators in advanced technical skills and leadership, with 92% of participants reporting significant learning gains and a high rate of classroom implementation.
  • Broad Educational Reach: The Center supports 964 faculty members across 138 postsecondary programs and 134 K-12 schools. Over the 2019-2024 period, an estimated 11,941 students were exposed to material derived from InnovATEBIO workshops.
  • Student Career Success: Evaluation data shows that students using Center resources report increased science identity, self-efficacy, and interest in pursuing biotech degrees and careers.

In summary, InnovATEBIO effectively bridges the gap between biotechnology education and industry needs by fostering a vibrant national community of practice that empowers both educators and students
