Jason Tucker) from North Central State College in Mansfield, Ohio were looking at ways to meet students in a distance format. As described in on the event page, the Biosciences Industry Fellowship Program, hosted by Forsyth Technical Community College in Winston-Salem North Carolina, was three weeks of packed action. The first week included visits and workshops in partnering schools. During the second week we participated in a week long green fluorescent protein biomanufactuing workshop. In the last week we visited and toured area biotechnology companies and closed with presentations by the participants.

Lonestar Community College and Des Moines Community College have partnered with NASA and the UTEX Culture Collection of Algae at the University of Texas, Austin, to put microalgae into Space! This exciting project will allow scientists on the International Space Station study the effects of microgravity on the growth of the algae. And at the conclusion of the study, the samples will be brought back to Earth and shared with educators so that students can also study the samples!

DMACC Biotechnology program graduate Lyndsay Baker has accomplished one of her dreams. In November she will have an experiment sent to the International Space Station for research. Lyndsay hopes that the algae grown as part of her experiment will produce the compound astaxanthin to help keep astronauts healthy.
