The High Impact Technology Exchange Conference is happening this week in San Francisco. We've compiled a list of all the biotech-related activities to save the trouble of hunting for them in the program.

Tues, July 26:

12:45 - 5 pm Tour Bio-Rad Laboratories and learn about Real-Time PCR

Weds, July 27:

10:30 am Seacliff D Using Industry to Start and Grow a New Biotechnology Program

In 2008, FLATE (Florida Advanced Technological Education Center) partnered with the University of South Florida's Center for Excellence for Biotechnology to support the growing workforce needs of the biotechnology industry sector in Tampa Bay area, working with both of the academic science and workforce programs at Hillsborough Community College (HCC). FLATE has developed and deployed a new Associate of Science Degree in Biotechnology at the college. HCC expects to graduate its first A.S. Biotechnology students in 2012. However, the program already has over 100 declared majors. This presentation will share the comprehensive approach to this new program's development.

11:30 - 12:15 Bayview A Web-Based Virtual and Hybrid Laboratories in Biomanufacturing Curriculum

This session will discuss the motivations for and various ways of integrating web-based virtual instruments into traditional classroom, online, and blended biomanufacturing curriculum. The presenters will demonstrate how the online tools can be used for studying theory and basic principles underlying the biomanufacturing processes, getting familiar with equipment and learning how to use it, conducting online and similar hands-on experiments, and conducting performance-based assessment of students' knowledge and skills. A virtual chromatography lab and the prototype of a virtual bioreactor will be used for illustration. The virtual tools are linked with the skill standards, biomanufacturing curriculum, and SOPs developed by the NBC2.

3:15 - 4: 15 pm Bayview A Forum on Technological Education

This session will feature technical professionals from different fields who will provide insights into their technical education. The audience will listen for the first half of the session and actively participate in the second half. The technical professionals will speak candidly about their skill preparation. The audience will hear about technical careers and learn what is important for educating the technical workforce.

8:45 am - 9:30 Garden B Location Bioluminescent Bacteria Illuminate the World of Biotechnologists

Participate in a hands-on workshop and learn about a special kind of bacteria that are bioluminescent, that is, that produce light. These bacteria normally live symbiotically inside a species of squid. When the squid hunt at night, the bacteria generate light, making the squid nearly invisible in the moonlight. Participants will have the opportunity to work with the bacteria and manipulate the conditions that cause them to produce light. Participants will also learn how biotechnologists harness bioluminescence in the laboratory for a variety of practical applications.

9:45 am - 10:30 am Garden B Biotechnology: Building a Stem Cell Program From High School to Career

Stem cells are on the cutting edge of the science frontier. California voters supported Stem cell research and City College of San Francisco developed a stem cell certificate program to prepare technicians. This program has generated interest in STEM careers for high school students as well as the variety of students attending the community college. Industry has become engaged and students are participating in internships. The panel representing community college faculty, high school teachers, and industry will present some successful strategies as well as some of the challenges. Expect a lively discussion and audience participation.

11:00 - 11:45 am Garden A Connecting to the Bio-Link Community

Bio-Link is employing multiple strategies to facilitate communication. These include social media such as LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, blogs, and the Bio-Link website and listserv. The presenters will provide case studies on how these forms of media can benefit educators and will demonstrate how this might work. The presenters will also work with Bio-Link programs to help them get up and running on the Bio-Link website.
