Event Description
Professional Development for Teachers at Shoreline Community College: Cancer Biology Kit Workshop
This workshop will be held Friday, May 8 (4pm - 9pm) and Saturday, May 9 (9am - 4:30pm) and will be open to up to 24 teachers. The Cancer Biology: Diagnostics and Treatments curriculum provides a foundation in cancer biology using a hypothetical case study of breast cancer patients to explore how Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assays (ELISAs), Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), genetic testing (bioinformatics), and Fluorescent Cell Staining are used to diagnose cancer, determine the cause of a particular cancer, and develop targeted therapies to treat cancer. Teachers will also learn about the cell cycle, tumor suppressor genes and oncogenes, how mutations in genes involved in DNA repair or cell division can cause cancer, and how antibodies are used as both diagnostic and therapeutic tools. STEM Clock hours will be available.
ABE Labs 1-5 Kit Workshop
This workshop will be held for 1.5 - 2 days during the week of Aug 10-14. Exact dates TBD. It will be open to up to 24 teachers. This workshop takes teachers through Labs 1-5 of the Amgen Biotechnology Experience (ABE) curriculum. You will learn, from the student perspective, how genetic engineering has made significant impacts on the medical field. The curriculum begins with an introduction to micropipetting and agarose gel electrophoresis. It then moves on to restriction enzyme digestion of DNA, ligation of DNA to form a new plasmid containing the gene encoding red fluorescent protein (RFP), and bacterial transformation. The use of bioinformatics programs to compare DNA and protein sequences is included. STEM Clock hours will be available.
