Industrial Biotechnology Teacher Experience
Event Details
Event Description
The Industrial Biotechnology Teacher Experience is a two week, 80-hour program developed for teachers who are, or will be, teaching courses within Florida’s Biotechnology Program (#8736000), Project Lead the Way’s Biomedical Program, or for any teacher wanting to integrate the biotechnology concepts and techniques into their curricula. The combination of academic and performance standards within the framework of the state of Florida’s Industrial Biotechnology courses presents a challenge to teacher certification. A teacher must hold both a valid Florida-issued educator certificate in Biology or Chemistry, and have six years of full-time, occupational experience (or equivalent part-time experience) in the field. Recognizing the challenge of finding qualified teachers for this emerging industry, Florida’s Department of Education recognizes an alternate means of District Certification, which can be earned by attending Biotility’s Industrial Biotechnology Teacher Experience.
Course Description
IBTE is a two week, 80-hour program developed for teachers who are, or will be, teaching courses within Florida’s Biotechnology Program (#8736000), Project Lead the Way’s Biomedical Program, or for any teacher wanting to integrate the biotechnology concepts and techniques into their curricula.
The primary aim of this course is to provide experience with the skills, techniques and knowledge within the biotechnology curriculum in the context of working in the industry. In addition, there will be guidance and practice with the preparative steps necessary for the hands-on components of the program. Completion of this course earns “district certification” for existing Biology and Chemistry teachers, enabling them to teach the CTE components of the program. Industry experience will include the design, development, testing, and manufacture of a biopharmaceutical drug. Participants will develop an understanding of the departmental roles, and careers, as well as the criteria associated with working in this highly regulated environment. The Biotility Education and Training Center is located in the heart of Alachua’s Progress Corporate Park, home to a variety of start-up and established biotechnology companies.
