SAVE THE DATE! Each year Bio-Link Fellows from across the nation travel to the Clark Kerr Campus (CKC) in Berkeley, CA to learn about the latest practices in biotechnology education. Come join us for our 18th Annual Summer Fellows Forum.
At the Bio-Link National Summer Fellows Forum, participants learn new skills and techniques, examine and test exemplary curriculum models and course materials, discuss ethical, legal, and social issues in biotechnology and learn how to disseminate this information within their own regions. Fellows are expected to implement new strategies into their own programs, to lead regional staff development activities, and provide prompt response to follow-up surveys.
Note: The Community College Day Program at the BIO International Conference will be held on Monday, June 6, at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in San Francisco. As a result this year, the Summer Fellows Forum will be a day shorter than usual.
BIO-LINK FELLOWSHIP
Twenty Conference Fellowships are available to this year to attend the Summer Fellows Forum.
The Bio-Link National Center will select individuals geographically to receive the Fellowship from the following categories: a community or technical college biotechnology instructor, a community or technical college math or science instructor, or a high school teacher. First consideration will be given to applicants who have not yet attended a Bio-Link Summer Fellows Forum or received a fellowship. Consideration will also be given to past Fellows who can demonstrate how this conference will provide necessary and unique value to their students, region and themselves.
The Bio-Link Fellowship includes single occupancy accommodations in a Clark Kerr Campus (CKC) shared dormitory style suite (or "Commuter" if local) all CKC meals, as well as access to all workshops, materials, the Industry Tour and the Closing Dinner Banquet. Due to rising accommodation and meal costs any lodging charges associated with "no shows," late arrivals, early departures or unattended meals will become the responsibility of the Fellow and billed to the Fellow at the conclusion of the Forum. It is the Fellows' responsibility to fund all travel costs (including parking and shuttle fees) to and from the Forum.
PLEASE NOTE: The CKC is NOT a Hotel and you will assigned a Suite Mate, and although you have your own bedroom you will share a bathroom. Therefore, please be advised that Spouses, Partners, Friends, Children, etc. cannot be accommodated at the CKC.

EARLY ARRIVAL OPTION: Rooms will be available for those Participants who are registered for the Community College Program (CCP) Day at BIO 2016 in San Francisco on Monday, June 6 and would like to check into the CKC the night of June 6. The cost is $80.00 for the extra night and is NOT included in the SFF FELLOWSHIP or Open Registration fee. Breakfast or Lunch will NOT be available at the CKC on Tuesday, June 7.
Payment must be made by check and in advance to the National Center by Friday, May 27, 2016.

Biomanufacturing
Presenter: Sonia Wallman, PhD
Description: Biomanufacturing education and training at community colleges took off in the late 1980's through the development of the earliest biotechnology hands-on education and training programs in industry clusters in California, Massachusetts and North Carolina. Community college biomanufacturing programs follow local industry need-early programs focused on biopharmaceutical production and analysis. Recent growth of industrial biotechnology in locales across the nation has led to the development of programs focusing on bioenergy; sustainable energy production and distribution; production and analysis of microalgae, yeast and bacterial industrial bioproducts and biodiesel production and analysis. The presentation shows the skills, knowledge and attributes common to all sectors of bioproduction and quality analysis. Student Faces of Success are offered as examples of how community college biomanufacturing education and training supports local biomanufacturing industry needs. Several biomanufacturing programs will be profiled and participants will be encouraged to ‘talk story’ about their programs, their graduates and their local industry.
Biotech is STEM - Bioinformatics activities for Biotech classes
Presenter: Ellyn Daugherty, Rock Star Science
Participants learn strategies to plan and implement innovative STEM biotech curriculum for all students at all levels, leading students to do science in adult environments. Participants will conduct 2 computer activities (molecular modeling and primer design) from the new edition of Biotechnology: Science for the New Millennium, 2017.
3D Bioprinting
Presenter: Dr. Mayasari Lim, SE3D Education, https://www.se3d.com/
This 3D bioprinting workshop covered concepts and applications of bioprinting technology in the biotech and biomedical industry. The workshop showcased an example of how an industry application can be transferred into a classroom setting and included a hands-on activity showing participants how to use a desktop 3D bioprinter. SE3D's classroom 3D bioprinter, r3bEL, can be used to print biological arrays and models efficiently and serves as a robust lab equipment for illustrating different examples across the biotech and biomedical fields.
Single use technologies in biomanufacturing
Presenter: James DeKloe, Solano College
Description:
An increasing number of biotechnology companies are introducing single-use (disposable) technologies into their biomanufacturing process. These technologies reduce upfront capital costs, increase manufacturing times,and reduce the risk of cross contamination of products. They also eliminate the need for cleaning and sterilization, reducing the use (and cost) of water, cleaning solutions, steam, and energy. The introduction of these technologies into the classroom better prepare students to work with this innovation.
Florida's Biotechnician Assistant Credentialing Exam
Presenter: Lori Wojciechowski, Biotility, University of Florida
Description: The Biotechnician Assistant Credentialing Exam (BACE) is an industry-recognized exam designed to assess core skills and knowledge sets identified by industry, and represented within the academic and performance standards of Florida’s secondary Biotechnology program. The test has been vetted by the state’s industry organization BioFlorida, representing more than 3,000 companies and research organizations in the biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and bioagriculture sectors.
About the Biotechnology Certification Program
The Biotechnician Assistant Credentialing Exam (BACE) is offered by Biotility at The University of Florida’s Center of Excellence for Regenerative Health Biotechnology (UF CERHB). The exam was developed to reflect competencies and skills outlined by the performance and academic standards of Florida’s secondary Industrial Biotechnology Program (#8736000), which are in turn based on Florida’s industry-described requirements necessary for this entry-level position. Students will be issued a Biotechnician Assistant credential from Biotility for successful completion of both the online and practical components of the exam. Schools may use the BACE for the end-of-program validation required by the Career and Professional Education (CAPE) Act.
The knowledge exam can be administered by an approved proctor via a computer-based online system. The practical exam assesses technical workplace skills, and is performed at an approved Exam Site under the observation of an approved Skills Evaluator. The BACE program and procedures are covered in this manual. It is critical that that Site Coordinators, Proctors, and Skills Evaluators implement the exam procedures as described to ensure the integrity of the exam and of student outcomes.
The certification standards for the Biotechnician Assistant Credentialing Exam include the Academic Knowledge and CTE Performance Standards and Benchmarks taught in the Industrial Biotechnology program at the secondary level. Certified individuals have a knowledge and skill set applicable to entry level positions in the biotechnology industry.
Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration
Presenter: Damon Tighe
Algae beads can be used in colormetric assays to study both photosynthesis and cellular respiration in authentic inquiry investigations (AP Biology Big Idea 2: Labs 5 and 6). This lab can be extended to study the effects of light intensity, light color, temperature and other organisms on these processes.
Team based learning in biotechnology courses
Presenters: Bridgette Kirkpatrick and Carole Twichell
This presentation introduces the concept of team-based learning (TBL) and it's applications in biotechnology education. TBL fosters higher-level thinking skills, encourages team/group dynamics and makes students accountable for their own performance. The session includes examples of how to adapt a class for TBL and how to use flipped classrooms to make better use of class time. We will demonstrate these concepts with interactive activities throughout the session.
Zika Virus and Drug Discovery
Presenter: Sandra Porter, PhD, Digital World Biology LLC, and Bio-Link
This will be a hands on workshop where participants will have the opportunity to use bioinformatics tools to look for and evaluate drugs to treat Zika virus. We will use BLAST, multiple alignments, and molecular modeling to identify potential drugs and determine if they might work. The example below shows Sofosbuvir bound to the RNA polymerase from Hepatitis C virus.

Genome Engineering with CRISPR & Cas Workshop
Presenters: Thomas Tubon, PhD, Madison College, Sandra Porter, PhD, Digital World Biology and Bio-Link
Together CRISPR and Cas provide bacteria with an adaptive immune system that allows them to identify and defend against new viral invaders. While characterizing the basic biology of this system, researchers discovered that the Cas9 protein could be harnessed to engineer genomic DNA. In this session, we will discuss the basic biology of the CRISPR / Cas system and discuss how researchers are using this system in new ways to engineer living things.
We also explored molecular models of Cas proteins bound to CRISPR RNA and DNA with Molecule World on the iPad. A collection of these structures can be found in the CRISPR Structure Collection from Digital World Biology.
